Tackling food waste and food poverty in London

At least 3 million tonnes of edible food waste is generated by the UK food industry each year. At the same time, food poverty is a huge and growing problem, and almost 4 million children in the UK live in households that struggle to put food on the table.

The Felix Project provides a free door-to-door service to collect surplus food from suppliers, and deliver it to charities. In 2020 alone, the charity provided food for 21.1 million meals and worked with hundreds of projects and suppliers, helping disadvantaged adults and children get access to high-quality food. During the COVID-19 outbreak, they also delivered to London's emergency food hubs, serving people who are sick and in isolation.

The Quintessentially Foundation partnered with The Felix Project between December 2017 and December 2020. As a core partner in its formative years, we worked alongside the charity as it grew the number of meals provided to families from 3.5 million in 2018 to over 21 million today.

Together, we raised over £2 million through events and partnerships to provide healthy meals and food that would have otherwise gone to waste to some of the most vulnerable people in our community. We helped facilitate introductions to other partners and supporters who shared their vision of a London where no-one goes hungry and good food is never wasted. And over 100 people from the Quintessentially Foundation network volunteered with the charity to enable it to reach.

“We would not have been able to achieve this progress without the support that we have had from the Quintessentially Foundation and the funding we have in place from you for future years will help us succeed in our ambitions. Thank you.”
